Study Questions:

  1. Read Luke 9:23 – 24.  If you want to follow Jesus, what do you have to do, according to this passage?
  2. What does it mean to deny yourself and take up your cross?
  3. Read Luke 9:57 – 58.  In this passage, someone approaches Jesus and promises to follow Him anywhere.  What is Jesus’ response?  What do you think Jesus was communicating with this statement?
  4. Read Luke 9:59 – 60.  Why does this one in this verse hesitate to follow Jesus?  What did Jesus tell him to do?
  5. Read Luke 9:61 – 62.  Again we see a potential disciple who is more concerned with tying up loose ends before following Jesus.  What does Jesus say to him/her?  In what ways do we decide to follow and obey Jesus and then “look back”?  What kinds of things make you want to “look back” or give up from following Jesus?
  6. Are you living as a disciple, a follower, of Jesus Christ?  How can you tell?  Has Jesus ever led you down a path in life where you did not want to follow?  What was your response?
  7. Jesus is very frank and forthright with all those who seek to follow Him in this passage.  He makes the cost of discipleship very plain.  Are you prepared to follow Jesus, whatever the cost?  Whatever your response, tell Jesus what you are thinking and ask Him to make you a true disciple.
